Ruby Waxx commercial wellness and beauty fitout, orchestrated by the commercial fitout experts at Total Fitouts Auckland Central, stood as a testament to their prowess in transforming challenging spaces into thriving establishments. The visionary behind the commercial interior design, Toni Brandso from Material Creative, played a crucial role in breathing life into the client, Deborah Barnham’s, vision.
The commercial fitout began with the resurrection of a vacant tenancy that had languished in obscurity for years due to its peculiar and confined layout. To navigate the complexities, a comprehensive 3D scan of the space using Matterport technology laid the foundation for a design that maximised both functionality and aesthetics. The entire construction process took approximately four weeks and culminated in the commercial wellness and beauty space of Ruby Waxx—a now flourishing business.
Situated in the bustling and trendy Ponsonby Auckland area, the project faced initial reluctance from potential occupants who deemed the space challenging to work with. However, the skilled hands of Luther and the Total Fitouts Auckland Central team, coupled with Toni from Material Creative’s innovative commercial interior design, successfully transformed the problematic space into a sought-after establishment.
The project scope of the commercial shopfit required meticulous planning and collaboration to overcome initial hurdles, such as a high estimated cost. Working closely with the client and the landlord, Total Fitouts Auckland Central crafted floor plans that aligned with budget constraints while ensuring the space met the client’s expectations.

The defit process involved gutting the entire space and introducing a mezzanine with an extension. A strategic reconfiguration of the stairs, replacing a cumbersome spiral staircase, enhanced spatial efficiency.
The top level now accommodates staff areas, storage, and a consulting room, reflecting the specialised focus of Ruby Waxx as a hair removal and waxing company offering laser, waxing, and threading services. Downstairs features two treatment rooms and a meticulously designed bathroom, adorned with luxury vinyl tile flooring to withstand high foot traffic.
The aesthetic appeal of the treatment rooms is amplified by wallpaper designed by Emma Hayes and a French wash paint finish, contributing to a distinct and elegant atmosphere. To adhere to budget constraints, the reception counter was custom-built by Total Fitouts Auckland Central, complemented by cost-effective cabinetry sourced from a large commercial store. Practical elements, such as handrails and beams, were coated in black powder to seamlessly blend with the overall design.
The overall ambience of the commercial wellness and beauty fitout was enhanced by specialised custom neon signage company Radikal Neon’s cool illuminated signage, locally supplied to maintain a unique flair. “We thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of putting together the custom RW neon sign, the simple yet stunning design really leant itself to being lit up. The location in which it was to be installed was tight but ultimately we came up with the perfect size solution for the sign to be able really maximise it’s surroundings – and add a nice pop of light to the space!“
Challenges arose from the idiosyncrasies of the commercial fit out, making the transportation and placement of furniture and other items a delicate dance to avoid disruptions. Despite these challenges, the project unfolded as an enjoyable and straightforward endeavour, guided by a receptive client open to innovative suggestions. Ruby Waxx Fitout now stands as a testament to Total Fitouts Auckland Central’s expertise in transforming challenging spaces into thriving businesses.
