The Baker’s Room, a captivating addition to Hervey Bay’s culinary landscape, was meticulously crafted by the expertise of Total Fitouts Wide Bay. Working with clients Nick & Louise Smith, commercial designers Total Fitouts Sunshine Coast South were able to work with the Wide Bay team and bring the local landmark commercial hospitality fitout in Urangan to life.
Nestled near Hervey Bay’s iconic Urangan Pier in the old Dayman General Store, The Baker’s Room stands as a beacon of culinary delight, specialising in a delectable array of baked goods both for retail in the café and wholesale distribution throughout the local community.
The project’s scope was not without its challenges, particularly navigating the intricacies of working within a heritage-listed building. While the external façade had to retain its historical charm, the internal space underwent a complete transformation. Stripped back to its bare bones by removing a hodgepodge of small rooms, it was reimagined to accommodate the demands of a modern bakery and café in two large open spaces, separated by a 600mm height difference between front and back of house. The commercial hospitality fitout now includes a large dining and serving area, a separate gluten-free preparation room, a large kitchen area packed with state-of-the-art equipment and a large self-loading stacker oven.
From the moment you enter, you’re greeted with an atmosphere that whispers of ocean breezes and sandy shores. The commercial design ethos is a harmonious fusion of coastal charm and industrial chic, all carefully curated around the hues of The Baker’s Room logo. Every detail, from the feature tiles to the rendered counter fonts, exudes a sense of craftsmanship and style.
One of the standout features of The Baker’s Room is its efficient use of space. Despite the constraints of the building, the shopfit team managed to integrate state-of-the-art equipment seamlessly. From custom gantries to meticulously cut lettering on each sign, every aspect of the space was optimised for functionality and aesthetic appeal.

If they said they were going to do something, they did it. If they quoted something, that’s the price you paid. The communication was very, very good.”
Behind the scenes, the commercial design process was a collaborative effort, with Ishoa & Telia from the Total Fitouts Sunshine Coast South office lending their expertise to bring the vision to life. However, it wasn’t without its challenges. From navigating slab heights to ensuring the availability of specialised equipment, every obstacle was met with ingenuity and determination. Using all local trades meant that collaborative efforts between trades helped to navigate issues including delays in new power connection, using diesel machinery inside a nearly finished space to install the stacker oven and to design and build the special lift to bring goods between the two levels. We even had a bench seat for the dining room built out of old Urangan Pier hardwood, tying the two pieces of local Urangan history together.
The end result is not just a bakery; it’s a testament to the power of commercial interior design and innovation to transform commercial fitout spaces and create unforgettable experiences. So, the next time you’re in Hervey Bay, be sure to stop by The Baker’s Room and indulge in a slice of coastal charm.
