The Spot Cafe, located in Kiama Village Shopping Centre, underwent a transformative commercial hospitality fit out executed by Total Fitouts Illawarra. The project aimed to create a modern, inviting, and functional space that caters to both the cafe’s operational needs and the aesthetic preferences of its clientele. The space incorporated modern elements with a touch of rustic charm, aligning with the cafe’s brand identity.
The Spot Cafe in Illawarra features a coastal theme, with design elements like natural timbers, terrazzo stone, French wash wall paint, and whites creating a serene and inviting atmosphere. The full scope of the project includes a variety of spaces: a commercial kitchen, mechanical range hood, cool room, ceilings and plasterboard, painting, tiling, a cafe section, terrazzo bench tops, internal and external signage, a shopfront with bi-folding servery windows, bi-folding doors and furniture. The total area of the cafe is 108 square meters, with specific areas dedicated to the kitchen and cool room. The interior fitout, designed by commercial interior designer Carley Austin from Emvy Designs, was a crucial aspect of the project, transforming the bare space into a warm and inviting environment.
The Spot Cafe showcases a modern interior with a bright and inviting atmosphere, accentuated by large pendant lights hanging from the ceiling. These fixtures not only provide ample lighting but also serve as stylish design elements that add warmth and sophistication to the space. The blend of wooden tables and metal chairs was made with both aesthetics and comfort in mind. The selection of furniture within the commercial hospitality fitout creates a harmonious mix of natural and industrial aesthetics, while the minimalist decor on the walls and the abundance of natural light streaming through large windows further enhance the open and airy feel of the cafe.
The counter area of the commercial fit out stands out as a central feature of the cafe, designed with sleek wood and marble finishes that exude elegance and cleanliness. The presence of rattan features adds a touch of rustic charm, complementing the modern design elements. Above the service counter, white and timber framing provides structural accents, while LED strip lighting underneath introduces a cool element to the space. This blend of contemporary and natural materials creates a cohesive and inviting environment that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

The exterior of The Spot Cafe was given equal attention to detail, ensuring it was as inviting as the interior. A service window was integrated to facilitate easier service flow outside, featuring subway and herringbone tiling, complemented by white-framed windows. The facade was designed to attract passersby, featuring stylish signage and tasteful decor. The outdoor seating area was thoughtfully arranged, providing a comfortable and pleasant environment for customers to enjoy their meals in the fresh air. The combination of greenery and well-chosen outdoor furniture added to the cafe’s charm and appeal.
The project faced several challenges, mainly delays caused by the base building contractor, which included a three-week period without a roof and incorrect floor heights that differed by 60mm from the provided base building plans. The commercial design phase took approximately eight weeks, while the build took 8-12 weeks, extended due to external delays. However, the shopfit experts at Total Fitouts Illawarra successfully completed the commercial hospitality fitout, meeting the client’s expectations despite the challenges.
